Baptism Friends
A team of parishioners who visit each family in their home to help prepare for their child's Baptism, and who welcome each child on behalf of the parish community.
Welcoming new life into the Church
The Baptism of a child is a moment of great joy for a family and for the whole parish. Our Baptism Friends are parishioners who give their time to accompany families in the weeks before the Baptism, helping parents prepare for one of the most important days in their child's young life.
Each Baptism Friend has been part of the parish community for many years and understands both the joy and the practical questions that come with preparing for a Baptism. Their role is not to test or to instruct formally, but to offer a warm, personal welcome and to help you feel at ease as the day approaches.
The visit usually lasts about half an hour and takes place in the comfort of your own home. It is a conversation, not a class — a chance to talk through the ceremony, ask anything you wish, and feel supported by the parish before your child is welcomed into the Church.

A visit from a Baptism Friend
Here is what new parents can expect when one of our Baptism Friends calls to your home.
A friendly home visit
Shortly after you enquire about a Baptism date, one of our Baptism Friends will arrange a convenient time to visit you at home. The visit is relaxed and informal — there is no preparation to do in advance.
The meaning of the Sacrament
Your Baptism Friend will talk through what Baptism means in the life of the Church and in the life of your child, and the promises you and the godparents will make on the day.
The ceremony itself
They will walk you through the Baptism ceremony step by step — the welcome, the word of God, the anointings, the baptismal water, the white garment and the baptismal candle — so you know what to expect.
Answering your questions
Whether it is your first child or your fourth, our Baptism Friends welcome any questions you have about the day, the choice of godparents, or anything else on your mind.
A welcome from the parish
Your Baptism Friend welcomes your child on behalf of the whole parish community and helps you feel connected to the wider family of the Church from the very beginning.
Practical details
They will confirm the date, time and church, and help you with anything you need for the ceremony, including the candle and white shawl if you would like guidance.
