A welcome into the family
Baptism is a great gift to give your child. It welcomes them into the parish faith community founded on Christ's love for us all.
Each year about 30–40 baptisms take place in the parish. We are delighted with the opportunity this provides to meet with the families concerned, and we work hard to ensure that the ceremony itself will be both relaxed and memorable for all.
We have a team of Baptism Friends who visit each family in their own home to help them prepare for the big day — familiarising you with the ceremony, the practicalities, and answering any questions that might arise. They will also be present at the Baptism, welcoming each child on behalf of the parish community.

The symbols of Baptism
The Cross
The sign of the cross is the mark of Christians. Parents and godparents trace it on the child's forehead to show that the baby belongs to Christ.
Water
For cleansing — a sign that our sins are washed away. Water is also necessary for life, a sign that the life of the risen Christ is ours.
Holy Oil
Oil of Baptism is rubbed on the breast of the baby. Oil of Chrism, blessed by the bishop, is rubbed on the crown of the head as a sign of sealing with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The Candle
Symbolising Christ, the Light of the World. The baptismal candle is lit from the paschal candle, reminding us that the light of Christ has entered the child's life.
White Garment
A relic of the new clothes worn by Christians after baptism in the first centuries — a sign of innocence and the new life of resurrection.
